Is there a grant for removing an asbestos roof?
No. In 2026 there is no state grant scheme that pays for taking down an asbestos roof . Neither the Danish Energy Agency, the Environmental Protection Agency nor the Tax Agency runs a fund for asbestos roofs, and the funds that regularly appear in the press are proposals, not schemes you can apply to. What you can plan around is the price .
Searching for grants for asbestos roof removal therefore mostly returns news articles about trade bodies proposing a grant scheme, and a citizens' proposal for the same. Worth following, but it does not change what you can apply for today.
We have not been able to find a single municipal fund for asbestos roofs, active or closed. Ask your municipality anyway before you start. If you get a yes, ask for the rules in writing before you order the work.
The craftsman deduction: what it covers and what it does not
The craftsman deduction (håndværkerfradrag) was reintroduced on 1 January 2025. In 2026 you can deduct up to DKK 9,000 per person for labour on selected green services in your home. It is a deduction from taxable income, not a grant, so the real saving is a fraction of the amount.
The deduction applies to labour only, never materials, and only to the services on the Tax Agency's list. Removing an asbestos roof is not on the list. A new roof is not on the list either. That is the short version of why the deduction does not help with the asbestos removal itself.
What is on the list includes insulation of roof and loft. If you add insulation while the old roof is down and the new one is going on, the labour for the insulation can qualify. Ask for an invoice that itemises the insulation separately, with labour separated from materials. The list can change from year to year, so check the current version on skat.dk before you count on anything.
The deduction is per person, so two adults in the household each have their own limit. The conditions for who can use it, and how it is reported, are on skat.dk. What matters is getting the documentation in place while the work is under way: a deduction that has to be reconstructed a year later from a single invoice with no breakdown usually ends up smaller or gone altogether.
Energy renovation at the same time: what the deduction can cover
The moment the old roof is down is the cheapest moment to insulate the loft or the roof structure. The insulation can go in from above without opening anything from inside, and the tradespeople are already there. It is also where the only public money anywhere near an asbestos roof sits: labour for insulating the roof and loft is on the Tax Agency's list of services that qualify for the craftsman deduction.
Do the sums before you decide. The deduction is up to DKK 9,000 per person in labour, and its tax value is a fraction of that, so it covers part of the insulation, not the roof. Taking down the asbestos roof and the new roof itself do not qualify, however energy-efficient the new roof is.
The Danish Energy Agency also runs funds for energy improvements to homes. Whether an application round is open, and whether loft insulation is included in it, changes from round to round, so check it on sparenergi.dk on the day you plan, and always apply before the work starts. None of the funds cover asbestos removal or roofing.
The 2026 proposals: proposed, not enacted
In March 2026 the trade body Dansk Håndværk put forward a proposal for a state grant scheme for asbestos roofs on homes: a grant of 25 percent of the extra cost of replacing an asbestos roof rather than an ordinary roof, capped at DKK 30,000, guaranteed for four years and conditional on the work being carried out with an authorisation, the waste being documented as delivered, and the building being registered as a home with an asbestos roof in the building register. It is a proposal to the politicians. No money has been allocated, and there is no scheme to apply to.
The government platform from June 2026 mentions asbestos roofs directly. The government wants to make it easier for private individuals to do the work themselves, remove the landfill charge on asbestos for private owners, and examine how the state-guaranteed loan scheme could be extended.
All of these are intentions. No bill has been tabled, and the Danish Working Environment Authority still states that private individuals may not demolish asbestos beyond the small jobs the rules exempt. Until something is enacted, the rules in our guide to the asbestos regulations apply.
The landfill charge is the item that hits you most directly. Asbestos waste has to be landfilled, and the receiving facility charges a fee for it, which today is part of the price of disposal. The proposal to remove the charge for private owners would lower that part of the bill, but it says nothing about when, and it does not change the requirement that the removal is carried out with an authorisation.
It also means you should not postpone a roof that is brittle or leaking in the hope of a scheme. A roof that needs replacing costs more for every year it stays up, and water damage is not something a possible future grant would cover.
So what does it cost to get rid of an asbestos roof?
With no grant available, the price is what you plan around. Asbestos roof removal costs from DKK 385/m² incl. VAT (DKK 308/m² excl. VAT). The price is a fixed rate per m² of roof area that depends on the roof type. Removal, packing, transport to an approved receiver and the landfill fee are in the rate. Scaffolding is not included, and the new roof and reinstatement never are.

A worked example: detached house with corrugated sheets, fibre-cement corrugated sheets, 120 m² roof area, costs DKK 46,200 incl. VAT (DKK 36,960 excl. VAT, DKK 385/m² incl. VAT). Enclosure, removal, packing and disposal are included. Scaffolding and a new roof are not. Indicative price – final quote after assessment.

When comparing quotes, check that they cover the same thing: that disposal of the asbestos waste and notification to the Working Environment Authority are in all of them, and how each one prices scaffolding. A quote that leaves out a line is not cheaper, just incomplete.
Municipal funds: how to check your municipality
We know of no municipality with a fund for asbestos roofs, but municipalities decide for themselves, and schemes come and go. Three steps that take a quarter of an hour:
- Search the municipality's website for grant, fund and asbestos, and look under building and housing. If something exists, it is there, not in a news article.
- Call the municipality's building department or citizen service and ask directly whether there is a grant or a collection scheme for asbestos waste from private households. The collection scheme is what most often exists.
- If you get a yes, ask for the conditions in writing before you order the work: who can apply, whether to apply before or after, and what has to be documented.
If you get a no, you have saved a couple of weeks of waiting. Whatever the answer, the rules on waste notification and authorised removal apply, and no municipal scheme can change them.
What you can do now
Even without a grant scheme, four things genuinely move the bill or remove surprises:
- Get the roof priced before you decide anything. An indicative price tells you whether this is a project for this year or for three years from now.
- Check your municipality's rules for asbestos waste. Many municipalities accept smaller amounts of correctly packaged asbestos at the recycling centre, but packaging requirements and quantities vary.
- Remember the waste notification. If the roof is over 10 m², or the work produces over 1 tonne of waste, you as the building owner must notify the municipality of the construction waste before work starts. We help with the details, but the notification is in your name.
- Use the craftsman deduction for what is on the list: labour for insulating the roof and loft, if you add insulation at the same time.
The last piece of advice matters most: do not have someone take the roof down without authorisation to save money. Since 1 January 2025, demolition of asbestos-containing material requires an authorisation, and the Working Environment Authority's fine level for demolition without authorisation is DKK 30,000 for businesses and DKK 15,000 for private individuals, with scope for increases.
