In Copenhagen’s apartment blocks it is rarely the building itself but the later alterations that need checking: bathrooms, kitchens, floors and suspended ceilings. In the apartment blocks of Indre By and the inner districts, many flats have been modernised several times. Those layers are what to check before you rip anything out: tile adhesive and floors under newer tiles and parquet, boards in suspended ceilings and walls, and pipe insulation around the heating pipes in the basement and stairwell. In a housing association it often makes sense to have the whole stairwell surveyed at once. In the villa and terraced-house areas of Vanløse, Brønshøj-Husum, Valby and Amager, corrugated sheets still sit on garages, sheds and houses, and a roof from before 1990 may be an asbestos roof.

Fibre-cement sheets containing asbestos were produced until 1988 and laid until around 1990. Floor glue and tile adhesive could contain asbestos until around 1980, and asbestos pipe insulation is most common before the main ban in 1972, but now and then turns up in installations from as late as around 1980. Only an asbestos sample shows whether the material contains asbestos, so have it tested before the tradespeople start.
